Thy word have I hid like buried treasure in my heart. Psalm 119:11 is one of my favorite verses. What does it mean to hide the Word of God in one’s heart? How does that keep us from sinning, and disobeying Him? By memorizing and meditating upon God’s word we get it down in us. Like a buried treasure that we can bring up to the surface in time of need. Knowing God’s word gives the holy spirit something to work with.
God’s Word Guides and Protects
There have been times in my life when I wasn’t sure what the best course of action was and His word came to me guiding me in the direction I needed to go. By heeding God’s word we protect ourselves from the traps that the enemy lays out to ensnare us.
Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.
Psalm 119:92 KJV
His Word is a Compass
So many times in my life I needed God’s word like a compass to keep me stable, to keep me safe from dangerous paths, to keep my faith intact, and therefore the reason I’m still alive today is His word and his loving watchful eye on my life. Life is hard enough. I can’t imagine not having Him in my life.
God is always talking, we just have to fine-tune our ears to hear Him. He is an ever-present help in trouble. He wants to get involved with every aspect of our lives. Like a loving father, he wants to be there for us meeting our every need, and keeping us safe from danger.
A Life Apart From God
In my teen years and into my early 20s as a young believer I thought I didn’t need to cling to God, I could get by without Him. I made my own decisions and they were not good ones, decisions that lacked purpose, direction, and wisdom. A young girl’s foolish attempt to live life without an all-knowing God. Well, let’s just say I have many regrets about those days. Yet in all my wanderings He only let me get so far. I was one of those that learned lessons the hard way. I now have scars that God never intended me to have. The beauty of it all is those hard lessons stuck and I know what it’s like to be in a deep pit and find that even then God is there to rescue you! Now I am much older and wiser and I don’t dare leave home without Him. I NEED HIM!

I have been young, and now am old(er); yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. Psalm 37:25 KJV
Treasure
His Word is a buried treasure waiting to be discovered. Thy word have I hid like buried treasure in my heart. Open up that treasure chest and experience His goodness today. He so loves you and wants to share His vast wisdom. We live in a world that has so much uncertainty, many voices screaming for our attention, and no map to lead us through the many land mines. Except we do His word, his love letter to us. As you go out in that big world today don’t forget to look at the map, His word first!
