Three Essentials to a Writing Business

Three Essentials to a Writing Business

Introduction

In this blog post, Three Essentials to a Writing Business I will share three essentials for a writing business, besides having an author website, of course. Those three essentials are a prayer team, a mailing list, and a media kit.

My first book as a self-published author was A Case of Mistaken Identity which I published in December 2024. I was fortunate to be part of Christian Book Academy. Through their standalone workshop, Procrastination to Publication, I could publish my book in 90 days. Since then, I have published five more. Let’s delve in, shall we?

Prayer Team

At the start of my writing business, I lacked a prayer team, and the difference was noticeable. It’s like going on a trip with no idea where you are going. Or standing on a battlefield with no armor on to protect you from the insults of the enemy’s arrows. It’s dangerous and meaningless. You need to have what I call boots on the ground. That is why earlier this year I renamed my prayer team, Boots on the Ground.

I started out by crafting a prayer team letter in Canva, then copying and pasting it into an email message. Mind you, at the beginning, it was just a monthly letter with no clickable links.

I talk about what my current WIP (work in progress) is and mention any pressing needs. With every prayer team letter, I include a general prayer list. I am thankful to my prayer team for being my

I now use Mailer Lite to write my monthly prayer team letters as well as my weekly newsletters. It’s more convenient to have everything in the same place. That way I can have clickable links and can easily send it out each month. I highly recommend doing a prayer team letter this way.

My writing business turned a corner the day I created a prayer team. I am eternally grateful for my prayer team. Thank you prayer team for being my

Next up mailing list.

Mailing List

Having a mailing list is a great way to expand your audience. It gives you an avenue in which to talk about your work in progress, share new releases, and it gives you a way for those who are interested in you to connect with you.

It’s always a good marketing practice to give a gift for an email address. By the way, I am considering changing mine out. Possibly a devotional for Writers. So if you are interested, keep watching for the new gift to appear on the front page.

I started using MailerLite for my monthly newsletter in 2024. I was perfectly fine with just having a monthly, so I thought. But as 2025 moved on, I felt dissatisfied with it. By the end of November that year, God proposed a new idea to me: weekly newsletters. Monday would cover writing and technology, Wednesday illustrations and web design, and Friday would be a spiritual lesson I learned. So far I am loving it and have been getting some good feedback from my subscribers.

There’s no wrong way or right way of doing it. Do what feels comfortable to you. After all, it is your time that you are giving. If monthly feels right, do that. If you want to take the plunge like I did and really get wet, then send one out more often. Either way, it is a great way to connect with your people.

Next up media kit.

Media Kit

My media kit is not even a week old. I knew for some time that I needed to have one. Well, 6 books in, and I was like I need to sit down and do this. I wasn’t even sure how I wanted to proceed. I looked at a few other media kits for reference and noted the basic framework.

  • Good headshot
  • Tagline
  • Bio
  • Media appearances
  • Talking points
  • Book (s) Info

As an author, it is crucial to have a media kit if you want any media coverage.

For example,

  1. If you want to be a guest on a podcast.
  2. Teach a class.

It can be a PDF or a website.

I went with the website option.

To get an idea, you can see mine here: Media Kit.

So there you have it: three essentials for a writing business. Just don’t stress it, have fun with it!
